St Anne’s Reel (Version 2): Guitar Lesson (Floating & Crosspicking Techniques)

In this guitar lesson for the traditional tune, St Anne’s Reel, we’ll take a look at an arrangement that uses the floating & crosspicking techniques. Often referred to as ‘harp’ like, the floating technique allows us to stack our melody notes over each other, creating a very pretty, unique sound to the guitar. The crosspicking technique is similar to a banjo roll, and we typically cycle through notes of a chord as we do this. The 2 techniques blend together really nicely and complement the sweet melody for this tune.

This is the second arrangement of St Anne’s Reel here on the site. The first has some similarities, but arranged in the open position, as you might generally expect to play a fiddle tune. Both arrangements are complimentary of each other, so will work together as 2 variations as you’re playing the tune.

The techniques found in this arrangement are well suited to the intermediate picker looking to develop their playing style. As part of the full lesson we’ll break down the techniques required to fluently play the tune.
