Get ready to learn a great Christmas carol & some awesome theory! The First Noel is a very pretty traditional English carol and this arrangement is in the key of D (standard tuning). While we follow the simple melody, we’ll be adding in a harmony using the 6th intervals. As part of this lesson we’ll look at the D Major scale played in 6th’s, which will allow you to pick up the tune very easily. I’d suggest this lesson is suited to the intermediate picker.

Harmony in 6th’s

A 6th interval is when two notes are six steps a part within a scale. For example:

The notes of the D Major Scale = D E F# G A B C# D

If we play the D & B notes together, this would be a M6 (major 6th). If we play the B & G notes together, this would be a m6 (minor 6th).

Another interesting way to look at the 6th intervals, is they could be seen as an inverted 3rd. Using the previous examples, inverting the D-B M6 would give us B-D, a m3 (minor 3rd). If we invert the m6 interval, giving us G-B, this is a M3 (major 3rd).
